I am so proud of how this looks and tastes. It features a very delicious black vegan caviar and shiso leaf. It would be a very special dish to serve for a romantic dinner or small fancy dinner party. I’ve also included variations that are simpler to plate.

Two Green Chutneys- Mint Coconut/ Cilantro Peanut
You buy a bunch of mint or cilantro for a recipe. The recipe uses a few sprigs out of the bunch. The rest wilts in your fridge. Next time, you skip the fresh herbs and the dish does not taste as good. Grrrrrrrrr. There are a lot of ways to preserve fresh herbs so that…
Tangy Cold Pea Soup (vegan and not vegan)
Last weekend, a friend had a bunch of women over to her backyard to make preserved lemons and dolmades, and infuse bottles and bottles of alcohol with herbs, spices, fruits and flowers. It was a glorious event and I’ll be posting about it soon. For a week previous to the gathering, I had been trying…
Cardamom Cashew Cream and Rhubarb Rose Parfait (vegan)
This is a blog post about food. It is definitely not an excuse to post pictures of the stray (available) kitten who lives on the back porch of a friend who had my husband and I over for brunch last weekend.Even if there had been no kitty it would have been a glorious springtime Brooklyn brunch….
Hitting the Rhubarb/ Rhubarb Campari Compote with Orange Peel Meringues
Last month, my cousin Gary came to visit me and taught me how to make the most delicious Curried Red Lentil Salad. Gary lives in Portland now, but grew up in Grand Prairie, Alberta which is very far North in my book. I know. I know, there are many places in Canada father North than…

Kerthy’s Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Bacon and Spring Onions/ A Hedonist’s Guide to Strawberries
Here is one of my very earliest food memories. I was 3 or 4 years old (I know because we moved a lot, and this happened at the house I lived in when I was 3 or 4). It was a sunny, hot day, and my mother had set up the sprinkler so that could…
Chinotto Braised Pork with Baby Turnips/ A Perfect Spring Dinner Party
Chinotto is an Italian cola that is flavoured with bitter orange. It is fairly common or Canada (or at least it was in Vancouver when I was a kid) and I was wild about it as a teenager. Here, in New York, it is only sold in specialty Italian shops. Two six packs of the…
Herb and Amaranth Fritters
I have been trying eat more whole grains lately. I can’t eat gluten and many grains make me feel sick, but I’ve realized that I had developed a bit of an irrational fear that has kept me from eating much grain at all, even the ones that are good for me. A couple of months…
Roasted Radish and Fennel Salad with Walnut Gremolata (Cotton-tail salad)
I love radishes with all my little heart. I love them raw, so I was skeptical about roasting them. Maybe you are too? Roasting brings out the sweet side of the radish and tames the spice, making them palatable to the radish adverse. Roasted radishes are sweet, juicy and retain their crispness nicely. I’ve paired…
