An extensive Pisces gift guide and a recipe for a good Pisces birthday cake. This is the kind of cake a squirel might make for their rabbit friend in their very cozy winter burrow. It is not too sweet and tastes like nuts and evergreen needles. This cake tastes better the next day and even better after two days. So, it is a good cake for a pisces who is not celebrating socially but who cannot eat an entire cake by herself in one day.

Blackberry Plum Pavlova/ Eaton Mess
For a few years before the pandemic, my mother’s family gathered on Gabriola Island in British Columbia for a big reunion every year. Our family is like a snowball, gathering friends and in-laws and out-laws in as it rolls along. This pavlova recipe was given to me by a friend of my cousin Sarah who…
Membrillo and Cashew Cream Parfait with Caramelized Rosemary Almonds
I created this parfait for the dessert course of The Garden of Alchemy Dinner hosted by The Muses in late October. I decided to use membrillo because my godson and his mother gave me quinces that they had picked in upstate New York. Turning quinces into membrillo feels akin to turning lead or straw into gold. You start with hard, lumpy green fruit with a tart taste and grainy texture and end up with a delicately floral sweet confection of an impossible ruby hue. It felt very appropriate to our alchemical theme!
Pear Sambuca Clafoutis
This is a simple recipe. If you have ripe pears and want to have a delicious pear custard cake in less than an hour, just scroll down for the recipe. Otherwise, I’m going to tell you about the complicated pie that inspired this easy recipe.
Pomegranate Tart with Pink Peppercorns (gluten-free)
These tarts feature a rich, tangy pomegranate curd set in a buttery gluten free crust and topped with little bursts of texture and heat from pink peppercorns. I made them for the Muses Valentine’s event in 2020, which feels like a million years ago.
French Toast with Caramelized Figs
Happy New Year! My husband made french toast for dessert on Christmas this year and it was so good that we decided to have it again for breakfast on New Years Day.
Passionfruit Raspberry Tart (vegan and gluten-free)
Today is my birthday! It’s never a good day for a birthday. There is often a blizzard, or flu epidemic or bad deadline in mid march. This year there’s a pandemic. Happy birthday to me! If it were ever a good day for having a birthday party, I might make this my requested birthday tart. I…
Vegan and Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie
Here is a truly delicious vegan and gluten-free pumpkin pie recipe. The filling is seasoned to perfection and silky smooth and the crust has little bits of crystalized ginger. It’s so good. It can be enjoyed equally by those without any dietary restrictions at all. I made this pie last December when our oven…
Creamy Passionfruit Mango Parfait (vegan)
Oh how I adore Passionfruit. I have recently discovered a very good source for passionfruit puree, which is helping me to get over my deep and abiding regret about not eating more fresh passionfruit when I lived in Hawaii (See my post post on Regret and Coconut Passionfruit Chia Seed Pudding). It’s called Perfect Puree…
Cranberry, Almond, Ginger Tart (gluten-free)
My plan was to make this tart to bring to every holiday party I went to this year. It’s a beautiful tart, all shiny and red and studded with candied ginger. The jam filling packs a punch between the tartness of the cranberries and the spice of the ginger, but there is just a thin…
